All the creatures had gotten quiet after she had unlocked the Kelpie’s cage and she felt their eyes on her, they were smarter than some gave them credit for. Instead of running for it like she so wanted to, she went around to each cage releasing the being it contained, winged horses, dragons, all manner of pet, even a gryphon, though what someone would want with a gryphon there was no telling. The last cage that needed to be unlocked was the one that held the Warmongrels. One or two of the smaller animals had slipped away but most of the creatures were still standing there, perhaps unsure of their newfound freedom, but she knew that once she opened the cage keeping Shp and Huuh all hell would break loose, Shp would make sure of that.
She took a deep breath and inserted the key, “We must never return to this place.” She turned the key and pulled the cage door open, as if it were some kind of signal, they all made their various noises of challenge and rushed the stairs; crashing and screaming sounded from above.
She exhaled, and opened her eyes, not realizing that she had closed them. She wished that she hadn’t, Shp was walking back and forth in front of her, salivating.
As he lunged for her, a red streak appeared, knocking into his side and throwing him past her. Huuh stood over him growling and threatening, she backed up a little bit, allowing him to get up, he looked at her then at Rush then back at her, he tried taking a step forward but she snapped her jaws shut just shy of his throat and he seemed to reconsider. After another tense moment he turned and ran up the stairs, the screaming seemed to go up a notch. Huuh relaxed all over and turned towards Rush, tail waging and tongue hanging out happily.
“Well, if we want to get out of here, we best get on with it.” And they did.
